How to play Lights Out
- Tap a square to toggle that light and its immediate up, down, left and right neighbours. Edge presses affect fewer squares.
- Turn every light off to complete the board. Every press counts, including a press that reverses an earlier one.
- Boards are created by legal toggles from an all-off board, so a solution exists. New game generates another arrangement; your lowest press count saves across boards in this browser.
Lights Out practice guide
Pressing twice cancels itself
A light changes state whenever an affected square is pressed. Pressing the same square twice therefore restores every affected light to its previous state. Order does not change the final result of a chosen set of presses. That makes deliberate patterns more useful than chasing each bright square independently.
Two presses overlap one light
Two neighbouring chosen squares both affect the light between them. That shared light toggles twice and ends where it began, while other affected lights may change once. Before pressing a second square, inspect which lights overlap the first cross. A move can be useful even when it briefly turns some dark lights on.
A focused practice session
- Press one square twice on a fresh board and observe the cancellation.
- Try clearing the top row by pressing appropriate squares in the row beneath it.
- Review the bottom row before restarting; a systematic failure teaches more than random toggles.
What to keep in mind
Generated boards are solvable, but the game does not promise a particular minimum solution length. Best press count combines different layouts, so replay comparisons are most meaningful on the same arrangement.
