How to play Nonogram

  1. Each clue lists the lengths of consecutive filled groups in its row or column. Separate groups need at least one unfilled cell. A clue of 0 means no filled cells.
  2. In Fill mode, tap a cell to fill or clear it. Switch to X mark mode to mark or unmark a gap. X marks are optional notes, not filled squares.
  3. Complete every row and column clue to win. Any arrangement satisfying all clues is accepted; generated clues can have multiple solutions. Clear grid retains the clues, while New game gives another puzzle.

Nonogram practice guide

Start with what the clue forces

A five-cell row with clue 5 is fully filled. A row with clue 0 stays empty. Those rows immediately give information to the crossing columns. For a shorter run, compare its possible positions: a run of four in five cells must cover the central three cells. Mark only cells that every possible placement shares, then revisit the row after learning from columns.

Two single groups need a gap

A five-cell row with clues 1, 3 needs one filled cell, a gap, then three filled cells. The groups and their required gap use all five spaces, so the row is fully determined. Filling four consecutive cells would have the right total count but the wrong group structure. Read runs, not just the number of filled cells.

A focused practice session

  1. Find rows or columns whose groups and minimum gaps fill their whole length.
  2. Use X marks to make confirmed gaps easier to read.
  3. After every forced row, inspect the columns it crosses.

What to keep in mind

The puzzle checks clue agreement rather than a hidden picture. Some generated clue sets have more than one valid picture, and every clue-valid completion is accepted.
