How to play Reversi

  1. Yellow moves first. A legal empty square must bracket one or more Purple discs between your new disc and an existing Yellow disc, along a straight line.
  2. All bracketed lines flip after the move. Dots mark legal squares. If a player has no legal move, their turn passes automatically; the game ends when neither player can move.
  3. Most discs at the end wins. Choose computer or same-screen friend before playing. Changing that selection resets the board. The computer values corners and immediate flips.

Reversi practice guide

A large flip is not always a safe move

Flipping many discs looks rewarding, but discs near open edges may be flipped back. Corners are especially valuable because they cannot be bracketed from beyond the board. Read how a move changes the opponent’s legal squares. A modest flip that avoids giving away a corner can be more useful than a large sweep beside that corner.

A move beside an empty corner

An edge-adjacent square offers four flips, while a central move offers only one. Before taking four, check whether your edge disc lets the opponent bracket into the empty corner next turn. The one-flip move may preserve a safer board even though the immediate disc count looks worse.

A focused practice session

  1. Identify the legal moves without relying on dots, then verify them.
  2. Before playing beside a corner, inspect the opponent’s reply.
  3. Watch a forced pass and confirm that play continues until both sides lack moves.

What to keep in mind

The computer combines corner preference with immediate flip count. It does not perform a deep search. Winning is decided by final disc count, not the largest temporary lead.
