How to play Sokoban
- Move the circular player with direction buttons, arrow keys or adjacent-cell taps. A step into a box pushes it if the square beyond is free.
- Put every box on a green goal. Walls block movement; you cannot pull a box or push two boxes together.
- Undo reverses moves from the current visit. Restart level restores its layout. Next level unlocks after solving; five layouts cycle in order. New game restarts the current level.
Sokoban practice guide
Plan where you must stand before pushing
A box route is not enough: the player must reach the square behind the box for every push. Moving a box beside a wall can remove access to that side. A non-goal corner is especially dangerous because neither of its blocked directions can be used to push the box back out. Walk around a box first when that preserves more options.
A goal is above the box
A box has a green goal directly above it. To push upward, the player must stand directly below the box. Approaching from the top and pushing down moves it away from the goal. Before taking that downward push, check whether you can walk around to the lower square instead.
A focused practice session
- Before each push, identify the player’s required standing square.
- Avoid pushing a box into a wall corner unless that corner is a goal.
- Use Undo to recover a blocked route and compare a different approach.
What to keep in mind
Step count and push count measure different things. Walking extra steps to reach the correct pushing side can save an otherwise impossible position. The five supplied layouts are checked for a solution.
